MG has officially unveiled a significantly redesigned version of its popular MG4 electric hatchback, drawing inspiration from the sleek Cyberster sports car. This second-generation model is more than just a facelift—it’s a full-scale transformation, bringing a bolder design, increased dimensions, and a notable weight reduction.
The first-generation MG4 was a breakthrough for the brand, marking one of the earliest Chinese EVs to achieve international success. However, as sales in China dwindled, MG took the opportunity to completely overhaul the vehicle rather than settling for minor updates. The result is a hatchback that not only looks sportier but also promises a more refined driving experience.
Bigger and Bolder
Compared to its predecessor, the new MG4 is larger in almost every aspect. It now measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase that has grown by 45 mm to 2,750 mm. This increased size positions it closer to competitors like the Citroën ë-C4 and Kia Niro EV, while also bridging the gap between the outgoing model and the larger MG5 electric estate.
The most striking transformation lies in the exterior design. Unlike the previous model’s angular aesthetics, the new MG4 embraces fluid curves and subtle creases, lending it a more sophisticated look. The redesigned front end features thin, aggressive headlights reminiscent of the Cyberster, while the rear sports a distinctive light bar and arrow-shaped taillights, adding a modern touch. Even the side profile has been refreshed with new door skins, contributing to the overall dynamic stance.
Performance Upgrades and Weight Reduction
Under the hood, the MG4 now houses a 161 hp (120 kW) single electric motor, slightly lower than the previous 168 hp output. However, the car’s weight has been significantly reduced to just 1,485 kg, compared to the first-gen model’s 1,641 kg. This drop in weight is expected to enhance efficiency and handling, making the new MG4 more responsive on the road.
The powertrain is linked to a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy, though MG has not yet disclosed its capacity. However, it is expected to offer a range similar to the existing entry-level MG4, which provides approximately 218 miles (350 km) per charge.
What’s Next?
With the new MG4 now officially revealed through regulatory filings in China, the big question remains: when will it hit international markets? Given the success of the first-generation model in Europe, it’s likely that MG will roll out the updated version globally in the near future. Additionally, an XPower dual-motor variant could be on the horizon, catering to performance-focused buyers.
The next-generation MG4 is a clear statement from MG that it is not content with past success. By combining Cyberster-inspired design elements, improved dimensions, and a refined powertrain, the brand is betting on making the MG4 a more compelling choice in the competitive EV landscape. Whether it will revive MG’s fortunes in China remains uncertain, but for international markets, the refreshed MG4 looks set to continue its upward trajectory.
